The Cross

Like the Gregorian calendar divides Christian era between AD and BC, the card 36 - The Cross - divides what is at its left and right sides, diminishing the left and increasing the card at its right side.  What is at the left isn't cut or finished like it occurs with (10) Scythe or (08) Coffin, but decreased, leaving in the Background - its importance is reduced due to what comes after. If the left of the Cross is, for example, the Ship as a travel (03), and its right the Sun (31), the journey is shortened, set aside or forgotten, and the Sun (31) has its shine stronger intensified   - though in this case, burning someone's skin: what describes the Cross, suffering and pain.

If the Cross brings back from past a person to the life of the Querent, it is certainly not someone easy to handle - there will be a challenge. And sometimes the Cross identifies a religious person, like a priest or priestess, someone who is deeply involved in religion, any type of religion or deep believing. In fact most of times it is about faith, not religion and can also go as deep as fanaticism. Look the cards around it as always, to have a better view of the situation.

Talking about challenge, Clubs are the cards that represents challenge in Lenormand. As I always say, I believe that the cards never indicate a problem without also showing a solution (cause without an effect) and likewise when showing challenges, most of the times, they will also bring a possible compensation once the challenge is accomplished.

The Cross will always bring a test or a trial, usually a difficulty to be faced - for instance a harsh job interview or a difficult and challenging exam in which the Querent will need to work very hard to succeed. Important to note that this could also be a challenging meeting with a person the Querent had confined to the past and it causes confusing emotions that will make one not able to sleep at night, lost on its own confusion.  And it will be one, some or many nights of lost sleep, the distance between the Cross and the Querent gives the answer: near it, will pass soon; far away, further delay until undo pain.

Opening the Grand Tableau , it  announces a difficult period, and as the last card in its own house, closes a cycle. Opening a line of cards (inside or outside the Grand Tableu) it asks for attention: look around and see where the challenges are. Just above the Querent  announces great stress, worries, a burden - cards around it will help to explain better the situation. Below the Querent shows that despite trouble and challenge, the Querent will be able to overcome the difficulties.

In Brazil this card is seen as the card of wins and overruns, from the traditional meaning of pain and grief, although I rarely notice the card as a victory. If there are nights of lost sleep and distress, at some point the ideal is to be overcome, and if you can remember that period as a bridge between higher and lower or more conscious... Well, this would be another matter, and we should save it for another time!
